RB Idol Finalists Announced

Congratulations to the RB Idol 2011 finalists from Tuesday night’s competition at the Poway Performing Arts Center:

RB Idol finals will begin at 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 4 in Webb Park.

Theses finalists are invited to perform an encore at 7:30 p.m. on Independence Day as part of the Spirit of the Fourth evening entertainment that precedes the 9 p.m. fireworks show at Bernardo Heights Middle School.
Billman, an 18-year-old Poway High graduate who will attend Stanford University in the fall, sang “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from the musical “Les Miserables.”

• Krause, an 18-year-old Rancho Bernardo High graduate who will attend Palomar College in the fall, sang “And I’m Telling You” from the musical “Dreamgirls.”

• Tacos, a 16-year-old Rancho Bernardo High student, sang the pop song “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri.

• Tando, a 16-year-old Mt. Carmel student, sang the pop song “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga.

• Trombore, a 14-year-old Rancho Bernardo High student, sang the pop song “Cornflake Girl” by Tori Amos.

Plans ‘Spirit of the Fourth’

Rancho Bernardo’s 42nd annual Spirit of the Fourth Parade and Festivities is scheduled for Monday, July 4.

This year’s theme is “Today’s Youth, America’s Future” and Rancho Bernardo will celebrate today’s youth and their future impact. Grand marshal this year is Dr. John Collins, Poway Unified School District’s Superintendent, in honor of what the local school district does in educating today’s youth to be active, engaged citizens in America’s future.

Joining this year’s Independence Day celebrations as sponsors are: Casa de Las Campanas, hosting the Community Fair; Ashford University, sponsoring the Parade; and Todd and Mari Gutschow, Parade Band Sponsors. “We are extremely appreciative and grateful to have these individuals and corporations as sponsors for the 2011 Spirit of the Fourth Independence Day celebrations. Their distinguished leadership sets an outstanding example for others to follow. It also helps the Spirit of the Fourth more fully support and acknowledge the continuing excellence of our students, while continuing this proud community tradition,” said Steven DeMatteo, Spirit of the Fourth president.

2011 Spirit of the Fourth Community Fair

The Community Fair, a staple of the Spirit of the Fourth’s Independence Day celebration, offers a host of activities for all interests. There truly is something for everyone, so plan to join us on Monday, July 4th, for a day-long celebration of our nation’s birthday! And for those of you who can’t wait until the 4th, join us at Webb Park the evening of the 3rd at 6:00 p.m. for the free Freedom Club Concert, featuring the US Marine Corps Recruit Depot Band.

Breakfast in the Park – Start your morning off at 8 a.m. with Breakfast in the Park by visiting the Courtyard by Marriott’s Patio for a scrumptious breakfast before visiting the Wheels of Freedom Classic Car Show and perusing the many vendors and community organizations at the Community Fair.
Wheels of Freedom Classic Motor Show – The car show opens at 9 a.m., so if you enjoy classic cars, this is the show for you. Over 100 vehicles will be displayed at the show, organized and hosted by the Poway Cruisers.
Stay and enjoy the entertainment scheduled for the Webb Park Stage – At 9:30 a.m., the Patriotic Pet Contest, provided by sponsor The Animal Keeper, will take the stage for some fun prizes. The contest will be judged by Rancho Bernardo’s Honorary Mayor Robin Kaufman and members of the Spirit of the Fourth Committee, All pets are welcome, just bring a leash and costume and register at 9 a.m.

Veterans Memorial Service – A 45-minute memorial service will be held at 10:45 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Webb Park, in honor of the men and women who fought for our country. The principal speaker will be Brigadier General Terry Ferrell, United States Army, Commanding General, National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California.

Following the Veterans Memorial Service, Swiftkick Martial Arts will perform at 11:30 a.m., followed by a magic show by Abbie & TJ Productions at 12 noon. The RB Idol Finalists will compete for the Grand Prize at 12:30 p.m.

Other highlights include a static military vehicle display, the Art Walk, a Quilt Exhibit at the Courtyard Marriott by local quilt artist Mary Tabar, and children’s games and activities. Visit the Spirit of the Fourth’s Information Booth in Webb Park, pick up your Freedom Passport, stroll through the different activities and win a prize by having your passport stamped at the designated stops. Everyone receives a prize and door prizes are awarded to winners throughout the day.

And don’t forgot to stay for the Parade at 3:30 p.m., with Grand Marshal PUSD Superintendent, Dr. John Collins. Cap the evening with the evening entertainment and fireworks at Bernardo Heights Middle School, featuring The Eve Selis Band and the RB Idol winners. 2011 RB Idol Contest - Rules and Information

The competition is open only to AMATEUR entertainers who attend any school in the Rancho Bernardo/ Poway area. Professionals, including UNION MUSICIANS, or those whose talent is a principal source of income, ARE NOT PERMITTED TO ENTER.

ENTRY FEE: THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE!

AGE ELIGIBILITY: 8 to 18 years of age are eligible for prize money!

Past Winners:
If a contestant is a former 1st Place Winner of the RB Idol Contest, they may not compete in the contest.

Auditions:
NO AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD. The competition will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Poway Performing Arts Center. The five finalists will be decided on by the attending audience vote after the performances. The audience’s ticket stub is the voting ballot to be placed in a box for the performer of their choice that will be located in the Performing Arts Center Lobby. The top five vote getters will be announced that night and asked to come back to Webb Park on the 4th of July at 12:30 a.m. for an encore performance in front of a small panel of judges to decide the winner and runners up.

Prizes will be awarded as follows:
First Place $500.00, Second Place $200.00, Third Place $100.00, Fourth and Fifth Place $50.00 each
*Note: First, Second, and Third Place Winners will also be asked to perform at the evening 4th of July Fireworks at RBHS/BHMS Soccer Fields that evening if they are available.

Time Limit:
The time limit is 7 minutes to perform 1 song or 1 performance number.

Accompanists:
An accompanist, when not a part of the act, may be any age. Vocalists may use recorded accompaniment on a CD, provided the CD contains musical accompaniment only. Absolutely NO VOCALS OF ANY KIND ARE ALLOWED on vocal performance accompaniment compact discs. Sound and electricity will be provided if needed for amplification purposes.

Compact Discs:
Be sure Compact Discs are of high quality. A bad recording detracts from a performance. COMPACT DISCS MUST BE CLEARLY MARKED ON WHAT TRACK TO CUE FOR PLAY PRIOR TO YOUR PERFORMANCE. For vocalist CDS, they MAY NOT HAVE ANY VOCALS OF ANY KIND. Vocal acts WILL BE DISQUALIFIED if there are vocals on the accompaniment CD.

Check In: Contestants must check in with the Coordinator backstage at the Poway Performing Arts Center by 6:30 pm on the night of the performance, June 28th, 2011. You will be asked to remain backstage ready for your performance so that when you are up, you’re available and ready. The performance order will be determined by check-in order.

Spirit of the Fourth is proud to present the 5th Annual RB Idol Contest

The Spirit of the Fourth is proud to present the 5th Annual RB Idol Contest for this year’s Fourth of July festivities, sponsored by the Pacific Point Group at UBS. The preliminary competition will be held June 28th at the Poway Performing Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. There will be 5 finalists chosen by audience vote from a line-up of approximately 20 local talented middle school and high school students. The emcee of the contest will be Michael Rennie, Director of the Poway Performing Arts Center. Chris Burgess will be a guest performer at the June 28th competition. An opportunity drawing will be held, with prizes including rounds of golf, Poway Center and Old Globe Theatre performances, dinners, Sports Clips, skin care, jewelry, and other gift baskets.

Please plan to join us on the night of June 28th to vote for your favorite RB Idol contestant. Tickets to the contest are $10.00 – all proceeds benefit the Spirit of the 4th in Rancho Bernardo. Tickets may be purchased in advance by contacting Rebecca Burgess: rebeccaburgess@sbcglobal.net. Additional ballots will be available for purchase for $2 each.

The five finalists will compete July 4th from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Webb Park for the Grand Prize before a panel of area judges affiliated with the entertainment and music industry. The grand prize is $500 for 1st place. There will also be prizes awarded for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places, courtesy of our sponsor, the Pacific Point Group at UBS.
